A Timeless Tale in Ghent, Belgium: Rain, Revelry, and a Castle Reclaimed 🏰🌧️🍽️

There’s a particular magic to Ghent—a city where cobbled streets whisper secrets of the past and medieval spires pierce the sky like chapters in an ancient storybook 📖✨. Jason and I found ourselves swept into this old-world charm on a journey laced with laughter, surprises, and the kind of moments that nestle deep in your memory 💫💕

3/11/2024: Rain and Revelations ☔🍷

Our first brush with Ghent was—quite literally—a wash. A persistent Belgian raincloud parked itself over the city, and with it came the unfortunate closure of the majestic Gravensteen castle 🏰. But rather than retreating into disappointment, we embraced the storm with open hearts and growling stomachs 🍽️💕

Refuge at Café t Geduld ☕🪟

Across from the shuttered castle, we found shelter under the awning of Café t Geduld. The rain tapped a rhythm on the roof as we our drinks and watched the world go by 🌧️👀. There was something undeniably poetic about it—two travelers wrapped in conversation, the castle looming in the mist, and the slow dance of umbrellas across cobbled lanes. The café, with its snug outdoor nook and friendly atmosphere, became a haven of warmth and stillness 💛🍷.

Boon: A Feast for the Soul 🍽️🌿

When the skies finally cleared their throat and quieted, our stomachs spoke up. We wandered into Boon, a gem tucked along Geldmunt, just a stone’s throw from Gravensteen 🪔. Boon is the kind of place that doesn’t just serve food—it serves experiences. The aroma of fresh herbs and roasted vegetables filled the air, and each dish was a story told in flavors 🌿😋. The space, both stylish and welcoming, wrapped around us like a cozy blanket 🕯️.

A small traveler’s tip—watch those parking zones 🚗💸. Let’s just say we paid a little extra for first day in Ghent… with a smile and a lesson learned! 😉

3/14/2024-: Castles and Kindred Spirits 👑🌤️

A few days later, under a crisp blue sky, we returned—this time, with our dear friend Gerda beside us 💕👣. Her radiant spirit and deep love of history brought a new light to our adventure.

Gravensteen: Dreams Carved in Stone 🏰🕰️

Gravensteen, “The Castle of the Counts,” rose before us like a scene from a medieval tale 🏞️. Its grey stone walls stood tall, whispering of battles, betrayals, and bygone royalty. To finally cross its threshold was a dream realized ✨. From the ramparts, the views of Ghent unfolded like a tapestry, while inside, tales of armor-clad knights and noble courts echoed through the halls 🛡️.

Standing there, hand in hand with Jason and smiling at Gerda’s infectious wonder, I felt the weight of history—and the joy of creating new stories within it 📷💖.

📚 An Interesting Fact

Ghent was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe during the Middle Ages—second only to Paris in size during the 13th century. It remains a cultural powerhouse, blending Gothic architecture with vibrant modern life 🎭🏛️.

😄 A Fun Fact

Locals are proudly called “Stroppendragers”, or “noose bearers,” a nod to their rebellious past. In 1540, citizens were forced to wear nooses by Emperor Charles V as punishment for revolt—a symbol they now wear with cheeky pride 💪🧵.
