OUR EXPERIENCE AT THE FINGAL HOTEL IN EDINBURGH’S PORT OF LEITH

March 5–8, 2026 | Port of Leith, Edinburgh
Some places you stay simply provide a room for the night. Others become part of the story of your journey.
Our three-night stay aboard the Fingal Hotel was one of those rare experiences that feels memorable from the moment you step aboard. Moored in the historic Port of Leith, just a short distance from the heart of Edinburgh, this floating boutique hotel blends maritime history with five-star comfort in a way few hotels can match.
Jason and I checked in on March 5, 2026, beginning our Scotland journey in what may be one of the most unique hotels we’ve ever experienced.
A Ship with a Story

Before it became a luxury hotel, the Fingal lived a very different life.
Launched in 1963, the vessel served the Northern Lighthouse Board as a lighthouse tender.
For decades, it transported engineers, equipment, and supplies to Scotland’s remote lighthouses scattered along rugged coastlines.
Today, the ship has been beautifully restored and transformed into a five-star floating boutique hotel, preserving its maritime heritage while offering refined modern luxury.
Throughout the ship, you’ll notice subtle nods to its working past:
- Polished brass fixtures
- Rich wood paneling
- Nautical artwork and detailing
- Maritime-inspired décor
The atmosphere feels both elegant and historic — as if the ship still carries stories from its decades at sea.
Our Cabin: Cape Wrath

During our stay, we booked a standard category cabin named Cape Wrath.
Each cabin aboard the Fingal is individually named after Scottish coastal locations, and Cape Wrath — located at the northwestern tip of mainland Scotland — felt like a fitting tribute to the ship’s lighthouse service history.
Although it’s part of the standard cabin category, the experience felt anything but standard.
Our cabin included:
- A luxurious king-size bed with plush linens
- Warm wood tones and elegant nautical design accents
- A large porthole-style window overlooking the harbor
- A beautiful marble bathroom with a walk-in shower
- Luxury touches like robes, slippers, and Nespresso coffee
Despite being aboard a ship, the cabin felt spacious, quiet, and incredibly comfortable.
One of my favorite moments each morning was opening the curtains and watching the harbor slowly wake up in the Port of Leith.
There’s something uniquely peaceful about staying aboard a ship that makes the entire experience feel special.
The Hospitality That Made the Stay Exceptional
While the ship itself is stunning, the staff truly make the Fingal experience unforgettable.
From the moment we arrived on March 5 until we departed on March 8, every interaction felt warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive.
It’s that wonderful blend of professional service and authentic Scottish hospitality that elevates the stay from excellent to extraordinary.
Things to Know Before Staying at the Fingal
A few helpful tips if you’re considering staying aboard the Fingal:
• The ship is permanently docked, so there is no movement like a cruise ship.
• The hotel only has 22 cabins, making it feel intimate and exclusive.
• Dinner reservations at The Lighthouse Restaurant are highly recommended.
• Staying in Leith offers a quieter experience than central Edinburgh while still being close to the city.
Hidden Gems in Leith: Where to Eat, Drink & Unwind
One of the things I loved most about staying aboard the Fingal Hotel was discovering the incredible food and drink scene right outside its doors.
The Port of Leith has quietly become one of Edinburgh’s most exciting culinary neighborhoods—filled with local favorites, hidden gems, and unforgettable dining experiences.
Here are a few of my personal favorites from our stay:
🍽️ Sandy’s Pick: Dining Aboard the Fingal

Before you even step off the ship, you have access to one of the most memorable dining experiences in Leith—The Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar.
Dining here felt like an experience from start to finish.
The menu highlights fresh Scottish ingredients with beautifully presented dishes that rival some of the finest restaurants in Edinburgh.
While it may not currently hold a Michelin star, the quality, presentation, and service absolutely felt Michelin-level.
With its elegant atmosphere and views over the harbor, this is the perfect place for a relaxed breakfast or a special evening dinner without ever leaving the ship.
🍕 Sandy’s Pick: A True Local Favorite
One of our favorite discoveries was Brown’s of Leith, just a short walk from the Fingal and only steps from The Shore.
Tucked behind understated double doors, this lively waterfront spot offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that feels effortlessly local.
Inside, you’ll find Civerinos Pizza, serving up incredible, authentic pizza from the back of the space, while the front bar invites you to settle in with a drink—whether it’s a smooth bourbon, a glass of wine, or something lighter like fresh mint tea.
We loved starting with simple bites like olives and fresh mozzarella before diving into the pizza.
With its open, social layout and the buzz of locals gathering to unwind, it’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time.
It felt authentic, unpretentious, and full of character—exactly the kind of hidden gem you hope to stumble upon while traveling.
A Few Other Gems to Try
🥃 Cozy Waterfront Pub Vibes
For a more traditional Scottish pub experience, Teuchters Landing is a must.
Set inside what was once a ferry waiting room, this pub offers:
- A massive selection of Scottish whisky
- Cozy indoor seating and a waterfront patio
- A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere
It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
🍸 Maritime Cocktails with Character
If you’re in the mood for something a little more refined, head to Nauticus.
This beautifully designed bar celebrates Leith’s maritime heritage and offers:
- Creative craft cocktails
- Excellent whisky selections
- A cozy, stylish atmosphere
It’s a wonderful stop for an evening drink before or after dinner.
🦪 Fresh Seafood by the Harbor
Seafood lovers will appreciate Fishers, a local favorite right along the waterfront.
Known for:
- Fresh oysters
- Mussels and seafood platters
- Classic Scottish dishes
The harbor views make it even more special.
A Stay We Will Never Forget
Our time aboard the Fingal Hotel was more than just a hotel stay—it was an experience that blended history, luxury, and the charm of Edinburgh’s waterfront.
From our cozy Cape Wrath cabin to incredible meals at The Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar, every moment felt special.
On the morning of March 8, 2026, we checked out and moved to the Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh City Centre, where we joined our Collette tour for the next stage of our journey.
But I have a feeling our stay aboard the Fingal will remain one of the most memorable parts of our time in Scotland.
Is the Fingal Hotel Worth It?
Absolutely.
Between the incredible ship setting, exceptional service, beautiful cabins, and outstanding dining, the Fingal offers an experience that goes far beyond a typical hotel stay.
For Jason and me, it was the perfect beginning to our Scotland journey.
✨ Travel Tip from Sandy
If you’re planning a trip to Edinburgh, consider spending part of your stay in Leith—less crowded, more local, and full of incredible food.
The harbor offers a completely different side and atmosphere from Old Town Edinburgh, filled with incredible restaurants, maritime history, and unique experiences, such as staying aboard the Fingal. I highly recommend spending at least one evening simply walking the waterfront, stopping in wherever catches your eye. Some of the best travel moments happen when you don’t over-plan.
