🌿 A Delightful Day at Moulin Saint Jean, Fontvieille, France

By Sandy | Timeless Travels with Sandy

The Moulin Saint Jean, located in Fontvieille, France, is a historic olive oil mill with roots that date back to the 12th century. The Sourdon family has owned and worked the mill for over four generations. They have passionately cultivated olives and produced some of the highest-quality olive oil that Jason and I have had the pleasure of sampling. Their authentic, freshly made tapenade is simply divine.

The mill, boasting over 5,000 olive trees, is nestled adjacent to the 11th-century Saint Jean Chapel and within the protected Vallée des Baux. In addition to traditional olive cultivation, it highlights the region’s rich agricultural heritage.

Our visit was nothing short of enchanting. Jason and I embarked on this journey with high expectations, and the experience surpassed all our hopes. From the moment we arrived, the beauty and tranquility of the olive grove captivated us.

🌿 Touring the Olive Grove

As we strolled through the lush olive groves, the gentle rustle of leaves and the warm embrace of the sun set the perfect backdrop for our tour. Our knowledgeable guide just happened to be one of the owners who shared fascinating insights into the cultivation of olives, explaining the meticulous care taken to produce oils of the highest quality. This glimpse into the world of olive farming deepened our appreciation for the craft and dedication that goes into every bottle of their exquisite oil.

⛪ A Visit to the Old Chapel

Our next stop was the old chapel located on the grounds. This historic gem added a touch of timeless beauty to our visit. The chapel’s architecture, with its rustic stone walls and serene atmosphere, transported us to a bygone era. It was a moment of quiet reflection amid our exploration, allowing us to soak in the history and spirituality that permeate the place.

🫒 The Exquisite Taste Testing

One of the highlights of our visit was the much-anticipated taste testing. We were treated to an array of olive oils and tapenades, each with its unique flavor profile. The richness and complexity of the oils were astounding, ranging from fruity and delicate to robust and peppery. The tapenades, crafted with precision, were equally delightful, offering a burst of flavors that danced on our taste buds. It was a sensory journey that left us both amazed and inspired.

🛍️ Bringing a Piece of France Home

Before concluding our visit, we explored the charming shop filled with local delicacies. We couldn’t resist purchasing some of these culinary treasures to take home. The selection of olive oils and tapenades we chose will undoubtedly serve as a delicious reminder of our unforgettable day at Moulin Saint Jean. Each time we use them, we will be transported back to the sun-drenched fields and the warm hospitality we experienced.

Our visit to Moulin Saint Jean was a celebration of the senses and a testament to the rich heritage of olive cultivation in this picturesque region of France. We left with more than just souvenirs; we carried with us memories of a delightful day spent in the heart of Provence.

If you are in the area, I highly recommend planning a visit. The estate offers private tours by appointment, allowing you to explore the olive groves and mill facilities and learn about the traditional methods used for olive cultivation and oil production. Our tour concluded with a tasting of their acclaimed olive oil and some of their magnificent tapenade.
